Olga
When she was just a baby, Olga Conens contracted meningitis. The infection resulted in acquired deafness. She never let the difference define her.
“I felt driven, like I knew I could succeed,” she said. “I worked so hard to prove I shouldn’t be on disability for the rest of life.”
Since the age of 14, Olga dreamed of working in health care. Growing up she was told deafness would limit her career my options, but she refused to accept it as a barrier.
Olga was 39 when she achieved her dream of working in health care as a nurse technician with Mary Free Bed. Having overcome her own challenges, she knows what it means to beat the odds. She works alongside practitioners to help patients overcome everyday barriers on their rehabilitation journey – encouraging us all to challenge the status quo and pursue our passions.
“The patients inspire me to be a better version of myself and not to take life for granted,” Olga said. “As soon as I’m here, I completely forget all of the drama I may have, and I’m totally happy.”
Olga believes that when it comes to rehabilitation, even the smallest smile gives us strength. She’s here for those smiles and reminds us that success is about finding hope, working as a team and creating moments of joy for others.
Lisette
All her life, Lisette Wilson dreamed of being a nurse.
“I’ve always had a desire to care for people,” she said. “When someone in my family was sick, I was always the first person there to care for them.”
At age 40, Lisette headed back to school. Those years were a balancing act between raising her family, studying and working as a nurse technician. Her dedication was rewarded with a $7,000 Minority Scholarship from the Mary Free Bed Guild. The Guild established the program in the hope recipients would consider Mary Free Bed when it came time to enter the workforce.
That’s just what Lisette did, joining the Mary Free Bed Spinal Cord Injury team six years ago as a registered nurse. Four years later, she became a clinical care coordinator supervising all units on the night shift.
“I love what I do,” Lisette said. “I see patients get better, and there’s no better feeling than that. Rehabilitation is special.
“What I like about Mary Free Bed is that it’s not too big and it’s not too small,” she continued. “I feel connected to my nursing directors. They listen … they want to hear what you have to say. I know my co-workers, whether they work on another floor, another shift or in a different department. You form a family here.”
Annie Cango came to Michigan from Saipan after meeting Mary Free Bed registered nurse and Red Cross volunteer Kathie Fetting.
“When I started working here, I felt like this was my true calling,” said Annie, a nurse tech. “This is what I was meant to do.”
