Mary Free Bed Sub-Acute Rehabilitation Among Nation’s Best for Sixth Year in a Row
For the Sixth straight year, Mary Free Bed Sub-Acute Rehabilitation has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report for Best Short-Term Rehabilitation. Ratings from U.S. News & World Report help individuals and families in their search for health care needs.
More than 15,000 nursing homes, skilled nursing facilities and sub-acute care facilities were evaluated by U.S. News for the 2022- 2023 Best Nursing Homes in the U.S. The ratings include separate acknowledgements for Best Short-Term Rehabilitation, Best Long-Term Care and Best Overall ratings.
Mary Free Bed’s Sub-Acute Rehabilitation program received an Overall rating at the highest level – five out of five.
Mary Free Bed was also rated High Performing for Short-Term Rehabilitation with a score of three out of three. The Short-Term Rehabilitation rating is based on ten quality measures focusing on achievements in staffing, medical outcomes and processes of care.
Located on the fifth floor of the Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in downtown Grand Rapids, the Sub-Acute Rehabilitation program is dedicated to working with patients to maximize functioning after an injury or illness. The program is a joint venture with Trinity Health Senior Communities. The multidisciplinary team develops an individualized rehabilitation program during a short-term inpatient stay.
Conditions treated in the Sub-Acute Rehabilitation program include:
- Amputation
- Cancer
- General weakness or deconditioning after illness or surgery
- Heart attack and cardiac surgery
- Multiple injuries
- Orthopedic surgery
- Stroke
Mary Free Bed ranked better than state and national averages for a patient’s ability to return home after their rehabilitation. Fewer patients were rehospitalized during their stay at Mary Free Bed and fewer developed infections resulting in hospitalizations compared to state and national averages.

Mary Free Bed Sub-Acute Rehabilitation has also been awarded a five-star quality rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, based on health inspections, staffing and quality outcomes.
