National Ms. Wheelchair America Competition Returns to Grand Rapids
Competitors from across the nation are heading to Grand Rapids to contend for the title of Ms. Wheelchair America. Unlike traditional beauty pageants, Ms. Wheelchair America doesn’t focus on physical attributes. The competition highlights participant achievements, disability advocacy and presentation skills.
In the 52nd year of this annual event, 18 women will compete for the crown and the opportunity to serve as Ms. Wheelchair America in 2024. Judges look for the most accomplished, articulate spokeswoman to represent the millions of people with disabilities in America.
WHEN: August 28 – September 3
WHERE: Amway Grand Plaza Hotel, Grand Rapids, Michigan
Prior to the national stage, competitors won titles in their home states. During this event, the women will participate in different workshops on leadership training, self-care and advocacy.
Beyond the learning experiences, the women will experience part of what Grand Rapids has to offer with a scavenger hunt at Fredrick Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park. A new sisterhood will be formed during the nightly dinners among competitors turned friends, and there’s even a themed dance.
The weeklong competition ends with two events open to the public. Friday night, the contestants deliver their speeches to the public – sharing personal journeys and platforms. On Saturday, the public can meet the top five participants and see the crowning of the winner. Both of these events will be livestreamed on the Mary Free Bed Facebook page.
This is the second year the Mary Free Bed Guild has been the presenting sponsor of the event. The members of the Guild are proud to support these inspiring women as they compete for the title. Just as Ms. Wheelchair America impacts communities across the nation, the Mary Free Bed Guild features strong women working to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities.
“These extraordinary women travel to Grand Rapids to deepen their sense of community and impact the communities in which we live,” said Amy Stuursma, Mary Free Bed Guild President. “Ms. Wheelchair America brings disability advocacy to the national stage, and the Mary Free Bed Guild is proud to amplify their voices.”
