Manage holiday stress with these simple tips
The holiday season can be equal parts joyful and stressful. From long to-do lists to strained family relationships and the desire to create the “perfect” holiday, we often put too much pressure on ourselves.
When we feel stress, we increase our risk for stress-induced eating. Jessi Boehme, a registered dietitian at Mary Free Bed, has some tips to help you cope:
- Focus on what you’re grateful for.
- Practice deep breathing whenever you feel overwhelmed.
- Keep up your exercise routine.
- Remind yourself to do one thing at a time.
- Don’t abandon your healthy habits, even on holiday celebration days.
- Remember – you cannot do more than your best.
- Say “no” more often.
- Create a holiday-season schedule, and prioritize everything you need to get done.
- Reduce your expectations. Aim for progress, not perfection.
- If you’re alone during the holidays, pamper yourself and find a way to help others who are less fortunate. This may help reduce your loneliness and enrich your life at the same time.
- Do something you enjoy. Having fun is a great way to reduce stress!
