Our hospital has a 24-hour, in-house internal medicine service, with an advanced practice provider (APP) in the building at all times. For the majority of our patients, pages from our nursing staff are fielded by the APP (blood pressure, hyper/hypoglycemia, etc.). Rehabilitation-related matters are directed to the on-call resident. This helps to reduce the frequency of overnight calls and overall reduces call burden on our residents.

Residents participate in weekend rounding as well – the on-call overnight resident rounds on the inpatient unit on weekend mornings, with another resident or an APP, and is staffed by two attending physicians.
