Celebrating Advocacy: Ms. Wheelchair America Returns to Grand Rapids

The national Ms. Wheelchair America competition makes its return to downtown Grand Rapids in August. This annual, week-long event celebrates the achievements of women who use wheelchairs for mobility. The competition is based not on physical appearance, but on advocacy, achievement, communication and presentation. All of the participants enter the competition with one similar goal: to advocate for the more than 61 million Americans living with disabilities.

This is the 53rd year of this competition; this year, there are women from 22 different states vying for the crown. Each contestant won the competition in their home state before coming to represent nationally.

When: August 19th-25th, 2024
Where: Amway Grand Plaza Hotel

As part of the event, the women take part in workshops on leadership, advocacy and self-care. These sessions empower them to become even stronger advocates for themselves and others with disabilities. They also participate in social events, getting to know each other and experiencing Grand Rapids. This includes a visit to Fredrick Meijer Gardens Sculpture Park and local hospital and event partner, Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation.

“We are so excited for this year’s event, and we have a great group of ladies competing,” said Ms. Wheelchair America president, Shelly Loose. “We’re glad to be back in Grand Rapids again for these women to experience Grand Rapids, and even more thrilled for Grand Rapids to hear their stories.”

For the third year in a row, the Mary Free Bed Guild will partner with Ms. Wheelchair America to sponsor this event. The Guild is honored to provide opportunities and a platform for these inspiring advocates as they compete for the national title. Since 1891, the women of the Mary Free Bed Guild have been devoted to improving quality of life for people with disabilities. They are united with the mission of Ms. Wheelchair America and its participants.

The competition ends with two events open to the public. Friday night, the contestants deliver their speeches – sharing personal journeys and advocacy platforms. On Saturday, the public can meet the top five participants and see the crowning of the winner. Both of these events will be livestreamed on the Mary Free Bed Facebook page.
