Fifth-ranked Mary Free Bed Pacers to play for national championship
The Mary Free Bed Pacers wheelchair basketball team is ranked fifth in the country and is heading to Wichita, Kansas to compete for the national championship.
The Junior Pacers also will compete on the national stage, which means 20 athletes from West Michigan will make the trip. Both teams had their last practice this week before leaving for the tournament. WOOD TV8 and FOX 17 covered the teams before their trip.
The National Wheelchair Basketball Association’s Adult and Junior Wheelchair Basketball National Championship will feature 40 adult teams and 50 junior teams. The tournament begins Thursday and runs through Sunday.
“We are really excited to be ranked fifth in the nation, and if things go our way, we could come back number one,” said Lee Montgomery, long-time coach of Mary Free Bed’s wheelchair basketball program. “I believe we have the chance to win it all, and it just depends on who shows up to play ball.”
