Mary Free Bed welcomes next generation of rehabilitation physicians to residency program

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Four physicians focused on restoring hope and freedom to patients recovering from serious injuries or illnesses have begun their post-graduate training at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital. The 2019 class was selected from a pool of more than 400 candidates vying for spots in Mary Free Bed’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency.

As the new class begins the rigorous three-year program, the inaugural four-member class enters its final year. Launched in 2017, the program now has a full complement of 12 residents in various stages of training to care for children and adults with medically complex conditions.

“We’ve added four more excellent and dedicated physicians to our residency program, and it’s going to be a pleasure to help train them,” said Dr. Richard Ball, program director. “I’m quite confident they’ll become extraordinary rehabilitation physicians.”

The program, approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, encompasses exceptional clinical, educational and research opportunities in all areas of PM&R. This includes brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke, multiple trauma, amputation, cancer and other diagnoses.

All clinical rotations are based at Mary Free Bed, which provides the most comprehensive rehabilitation services in the state, including acute, sub-acute and outpatient rehabilitation, as well as home health care.

The 2019 class, pictured above, from left, includes:
