PODCAST: “U.S.S. Silverside Linings” Peggy Finds Her Hope and Freedom in a World War II Submarine
For our next two episodes of Rehabilitationships, we took a dive and recorded on location. Our guest for this episode is a history expert and what a better way to relive history, than seeing it firsthand.

Our guest for this episode of podcast is Peggy Maniates. She’s the former executive director of the USS Silversides Submarine Museum, a real WWII submarine that brings history alive in a way that can only be appreciated by walking where heroes walked.
Peggy shares her story of when she had hip replacement surgery and then developed femoral neuropathy. Weakness and loss of feeling in her leg significantly affected her ability to move, limiting her to using a walker and wheelchair.
She’s joined on these two episodes by Mark Stevens, a physical therapist at Mary Free Bed. He met Peggy and began working with her, when she was looking for therapy to regain strength and mobility after hip replacement surgery. All with the hopes of getting back into the submarine.
For this two-part story, we journeyed into the WWII submarine to record and tell their special story.
Check out the first episode in the player below, when Peggy talks about the history of the submarine and how she first started living with the loss of use of one of her legs.
Hear the end of their story in episode two, when Peggy started working with Mark and they begin therapy in the submarine.
