Run for Sight Along Michigan’s Lakeshore

This Labor Day weekend you can run along Michigan’s lakeshore and help raise funds for those who are blind or visually impaired. Saturday marks the 17th annual Run for Sight 5K held at the beautiful Pere Marquette Park in Muskegon.

The Run for Sight 5K benefits the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired. For over 100 years, ABVI has been helping individuals with low vision or blindness thrive in a sighted world. Each year, ABVI serves around 1,000 children and adults from across the state, providing programs and assistance for people living with visual impairments or blindness.

Runners and walkers with low vision or blindness are encouraged to participate with volunteer sighted guides.

This year, a special race participant is joining the cause: The Honorable Michigan Supreme Court Justice, Richard Bernstein. In 2014, Justice Bernstein was the first blind justice elected to the Michigan Supreme Court. He was known as a tireless advocate for people with disabilities when he worked as an attorney.

Justice Bernstein is an avid runner. He completed 25 marathons, including 13 New York City Marathons and one full Ironman Challege. He will be running the Run for Sight 5K with a guide, and then speaking to participants before the medal ceremony.

“This race celebrates the resilient spirit of the blind who have the power within them to find their way through darkness and ultimately to the light,” said Justice Bernstein.
