Weight Management Program teaches Rachel lifelong lessons
Rachel Webster joined the Mary Free Bed Weight Management Program, because she wanted to improve her lifestyle and overcome fears about her weight. Since completing the 20-week Foundation program, Rachel said she’s learned some lifelong lessons and lost 25 pounds along the way.
What are some of the most helpful things you learned?
There’s no replacement for having a group of people who are going through the same thing as you and who have the same goals.
The program helps you tackle weight management from every angle. The mental health–related lessons were very helpful to me. One of things I valued most about the program was how “anti-shame” it was. I learned how to empower myself to become healthier, rather than cut myself down when I struggled.
My relationship with food has improved. I’ve learned how to not see foods as good or bad, but on a spectrum. I’ve also learned to love vegetables.
What new habits have you formed?
I’ve learned that any movement is good movement. I’ve found ways to adapt my exercise and sources of movement, so they fit into my changing schedule.
Have you eliminated any medication or made any significant health changes?
I have sports–induced asthma and found that I rely less on my inhaler when I work out.
Would you recommend this program and why?
I’d recommend this program, because it’s not a quick fix but a chance for real growth and change. You learn lifelong lessons, and you have a team of people ready and willing to support you along the way.
The Mary Free Bed Weight Management Program consists of weekly hour-long classes with 8-12 people with similar weight management goals. Participants lose an average of 29.5 pounds, or 11.6 percent of their body weight, during the first 20-week phase of the program. Many participants continue with the program’s second phase, called Stride, to maintain their weight loss or lose additional weight.
If you’re interested in getting started, the next virtual Foundation class begins at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 19. For more information or to register, call 616.840.8908 or email mfbweightmanagement@maryfreebed.com.
