Three Mary Free Bed Leaders Named to Crain’s Notable Leaders in Health Care
Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation is proud to share that three of its senior leaders have been named to the Crain’s Grand Rapids Business Notable Leaders in Health Care 2024 list. This recognition honors health care professionals who demonstrate excellence in providing high-quality, whole-person care through collaboration with various health care stakeholders.
Crain’s Grand Rapids Business selected the honorees based on their career accomplishments, track record of success, and contributions to both their industry and community. The recognized Mary Free Bed leaders include:
Bruce Brasser, Chief Operating Officer
As chief operating officer, Bruce Brasser oversees all clinical operations for the Mary Free Bed system. Brasser started his health care journey in 1992 as a staff nurse. In 2002, Brasser joined Mary Free Bed as chief nursing officer. Brasser’s hands-on experience as a nurse and his ability to bridge the gap between clinical and administrative roles helped him in several senior leadership positions before assuming his current role in 2023.
One of his most significant achievements includes leading the partnership with Covenant HealthCare, which resulted in a new $40 million, 60-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital. Beyond his operational duties, Brasser serves on the boards of Wings of Mercy and Calvin College Speech Pathology and is active in the American Medical Rehabilitation Providers Association.
Ryan Podvin, Chief Financial Officer
As a patient of Mary Free Bed following a spinal cord injury, Ryan Podvin knows first-hand the challenges and value of excellent rehabilitative care. After his injury and recovery, Podvin obtained his MBA in finance with a passion for health care. He joined Mary Free Bed in 2012 as an intern, and his unique perspective as a former patient helped him grow within the hospital as the system grew.
Under Podvin’s financial leadership, Mary Free Bed has achieved remarkable growth and stability. He spearheaded a transition in electronic medical records and in securing a positive outlook on the Mary Free Bed A credit rating from Fitch Ratings. Outside of Mary Free Bed, he currently serves on the board at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park and chairs the Michigan Health & Hospital Association CFO Council.
Cynthia Springer, Vice President of Human Resources, Compensation and Benefits
With over 25 years of experience as a senior executive, Cynthia brings expertise in human resources and legal insight that has empowered meaningful advancements in strategic workforce development and cultural initiatives at Mary Free Bed. Leveraging her unique skill set, she founded the organization’s inaugural Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging and Strategic Initiatives department, underscoring a dedication to fostering an inclusive and supportive workplace.
Under Cynthia’s leadership, strategic initiatives are enhancing the employee experience across all stages areas. Her impact has strengthened organizational culture, elevated employee loyalty, and enhanced the workplace experience. Beyond her work within the organization, Cynthia is an active community leader. She serves on TalentFirst’s Summit Steering Committee and co-chairs the Michigan Hospital Association’s HR and Workforce Council.
“This recognition is really special because it highlights what I see every day – leaders who pour their hearts into our mission,” said Kent Riddle, president and CEO of Mary Free Bed. “Bruce, Ryan and Cynthia each have their own remarkable story, but they share one thing in common: a genuine desire to help others restore hope and freedom through rehabilitation. It’s my honor and privilege to work alongside them.”
